Offshore Wind China 2009 Conference and Exhibition to Launch in Shanghai in June

SHANGHAI, Feb. 26 /PRNewswire-Asia/ -- June 22-23, 2009, the Offshore Wind China 2009 Conference and Exhibition (Offshore 2009 Wind China) will be staged at Shanghai International Convention Center. As China's first offshore wind event, Offshore 2009 Wind China aims to discuss and present related laws and regulations, policies, market, technologies and products based on the prospect and reality of offshore wind development both at home and abroad.

Offshore Wind China is organized by Chinese Renewable Energy Industries Association and Shanghai International Co Ltd, host by China Council for the Promotion of International Trade, Shanghai Sub-council and China Chamber of International Commerce, Shanghai Chamber of International Commerce and supported by Global Wind Energy Council.

Although the global financial crisis broke out, enthusiasm about investment in wind power seems unaffected. As the global energy and environmental problems become increasingly serious, especially the obvious threat of global warming, wind power has witnessed a rapid growth with a global installed capacity exceeding 100 million kilowatts. The governments of various countries have taken the development of this new energy sector as a vital measure to address the financial crisis.

Currently, the installed capacity of wind power has exceeded 10 million kilowatts in China, but all of them are onshore wind power. Compared with onshore wind power, China has a richer offshore wind power source. Moreover, China is adjacent to southeastern developed areas, which are lacking conventional energy. The offshore wind power does not require any land, nor does it produce much impact on the environment. Shanghai East Ocean Offshore Wind Farm, the first large-scale offshore wind power project of China, has entered the prototype installation phase.

On January 15, Zhang Guobao, Vice Chairman of NDRC (National Development Reform Commission) and Chief of the Energy Bureau, pinpointed at the National Offshore Wind Power Development Conference that the southeastern areas enjoy favorable conditions for development of wind power, and the successful construction of offshore wind power will play a significant role in promoting the growth of wind power in China, boost the sustainable economic and social development of coastal areas and effectively respond to the climate change. According to Zhang Guobao, focus will be put on the following tasks: sites with better construction conditions should be chosen; the land and sea use plan and environmental protection assessment should be fulfilled; the wind measurement and resource evaluation should be improved. Developers and investors should be identified, and earlier stage work should be accelerated. Offshore wind power should be developed and constructed in accordance with national policies and regulations.
