Toyota to trim production 10 percent

February 27, 2009

Japanese automaker Toyota Motors Corp., the world’s leading car producer, plans to trim production 10 percent in 2009 to adjust to the recession, sources said.

Toyota is aiming to produce around 6.3 million vehicles in the production year, which begins April 1, Kyodo reported Friday.

At the company’s peak, it produced 8.68 million vehicles in the 2007 business year. The drop of 2.3 million vehicles is more than the average production at Mazda Motor Corp. or Mitsubishi Motor Corp, Kyodo reported.

Toyota held back its standard practices of making production targets public in December, saying the quickly evolving market conditions made production predictions too difficult.
