Hunt Oil Company Earns Silver LEED(R) Certification

Posted on: Tuesday, 3 March 2009, 09:49 CST

DALLAS, March 3 /PRNewswire/ -- Hunt Oil Company's Dallas headquarters building has earned the U.S. Green Building Council's Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Silver certification for Commercial Interiors.

Hunt is the only independent oil and gas company in Dallas to achieve LEED Silver certification for Commercial Interiors. To do this Hunt met stringent credit qualifications in the areas of sustainable sites, water efficiency, energy and atmosphere, materials and resources, indoor environmental quality and innovation in design.

Twenty percent of total building materials used were made of recycled content; the building uses 23 percent less water overall (with an irrigation system that uses 50 percent less water than conventional systems); at least 50 percent of electricity used in the building comes from renewable sources; mechanical systems consume less energy, and installed daylight responsive controls reduce environmental impacts associated with excessive energy use.

"As an energy company, creating a LEED-certified work environment was a conscious decision we made during the design phase," said Ben Tyner, Building Operations Manager for Hunt Oil Company. "Receiving LEED Silver certification is a great accomplishment for the company and demonstrates our sensitivity to a number of environmental issues we face today."

The building's energy-efficient and environmentally friendly features include:

  • Use of recycled materials including construction, furniture and fixtures;
  • Use of energy efficient lighting and extensive use of natural lighting;
  • Heating, ventilating, and air conditioning system that includes energy monitoring equipment to improve indoor air quality;
  • Water-efficient landscaping that reduces water needs and utilizes native drought-tolerant grasses and plants;
  • Use of low-emitting carpets, paints, adhesives, sealants and coatings;
  • Implementation of a corporate ergonomics program; and
  • Implementation of a corporate van/car-pooling program.

About LEED for Commercial Interiors

LEED for Commercial Interiors is the green benchmark for the tenant improvement market. It is the recognized system for certifying high-performance green interiors that are healthy, productive places to work; are less costly to operate and maintain; and have a reduced environmental footprint. LEED for Commercial Interiors gives the power to make sustainable choices to tenants and designers, who do not always have control over whole building operations.

Administered by the U.S. Green Building Council, this rating system is the nationally accepted benchmark for the design, construction and operation of high performance buildings. LEED promotes a whole-building approach to environmental awareness by recognizing performance in: sustainable site development, water savings, energy efficiency, material selections and indoor environmental quality.
