ZBB Energy Corporation Announces Energy Storage System Sale to Africa

Posted on: Friday, 6 March 2009, 06:00 CST

ZESS 50 with ZESS POWR(TM) TO BE INSTALLED FOR TELCO CELL SITES

MILWAUKEE, March 6 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- ZBB Energy Corporation (NYSE Alternex: ZBB) announced today that it has received an order for a standard, modular, ZESS 50 energy storage system incorporating ZBB's new and proprietary ZESS POWR(TM) power electronics system, from Likusasa Engineering and Contracting Pty Ltd (Likusasa) of South Africa.

Likusasa provides a full range of specialist project management skills, from design to commissioning & integration to assist its partners/clients in infrastructure development. Likusasa actively participates in the telecommunications and power infrastructure sectors throughout the sub-Sahara and lower regions of continental Africa. Its clients include MTN, Vodacom, Cell C, Celtel, Eskom and France Telecom.

Likusasa's Director, Mr. Gary Staunton stated, "Likusasa has been working closely with ZBB Energy to integrate the ZESS 50 into telecommunications base station infrastructure in Sub Saharan Africa since last year. We are pleased to announce that in late February 2009, MTN Zambia agreed to provide us access to a backbone base station on their GSM network for the technical trial of the ZESS 50. Further, in early March 2009 Likusasa approved the funding for the trial and has since placed a confirmed order on ZBB Energy for the supply of the ZESS 50. We are committed to successful completion of the trial and Likusasa anticipates a long and successful relationship with ZBB Energy."

ZBB's CEO Robert Parry said, "This is an exciting initiative for ZBB to be providing the first ever ZESS 50 coupled with our proprietary ZESS POWR(TM) power conditioning system for telecommunication cell towers. Continental Africa is one of the world's fastest growing markets for mobile phone communication because the poles and wires infrastructure that has existed in the Western world for over 100 years simply does not exist throughout much of Africa. Some of the world's largest Telco's operate throughout the many separate countries that make up this region and the investment in cell tower infrastructure has been enormous with over 18,000 base stations already installed and projected to grow to over 30,000 in the next 5 years. This investment now also includes adding technologies and products such as solar and storage to reduce the reliance on diesel generation at these sites. By working with Likusasa, ZBB sees a clear pathway to sharing in this huge market potential."

The ZESS 50 is a 50kWh 'plug and play' system consisting of one of the Company's standard 50kWh modules, together with associated power electronics through ZBB's ZESS POWR(TM) and integrates with the existing power monitoring system operating on site.
