Vietnam, Belgium, meet to discuss trade

Belgian and Vietnamese officials met in Hanoi Wednesday to explore new directions for increased trade and tourism between the two countries.

Vietnam's Ministry of Industry and Trade and the Vietnam Chamber of Industry and Commerce hosted a workshop to discuss business opportunities for European Union countries.

Belgian ambassador to Vietnam Hubert Cooreman said 30 years of cooperation between the countries held the promise of future trade relations, the Voice of Vietnam reported Wednesday.

Trade between Belgium and Vietnam reached $1.4 billion in 2008, and the bulk of that -- $1.09 billion worth -- came from Vietnamese exports, which rose 20 percent over 2007.

Belgian investments in Vietnam include 32 projects valued at $77.6 million, the Voice of Vietnam said.
