"BorgWarner's R2S(R) turbochargers continuously deliver high boost pressure over the entire engine speed range, ensuring optimum engine response at all times while reducing fuel consumption," said
BorgWarner's R2S(R) regulated two-stage turbocharging system consists of two series-connected turbochargers: a smaller unit (referred to as the high-pressure turbocharger) and a larger unit (known as the low-pressure turbocharger). At low engine speeds, the smaller high-pressure turbocharger delivers spontaneous engine response without "turbo lag." The fast build-up of boost pressure improves pull-away torque and accelerating from a standing start. As a result, the S80 can accelerate from 0 to 62 mph (100km/h) in just 8 seconds, in spite of weighing nearly 1.7 tons. With increasing engine speed, the larger low-pressure turbocharger gradually takes over more of the work, providing more power when accelerating at higher speeds.
Compared with single-stage turbocharging, BorgWarner's R2S(R) turbocharging technology also introduces higher levels of exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) across a wider range, which not only delivers high performance and better fuel economy, but reduces emissions. While offering excellent dynamics, Volvo's D5 diesel engine emits only 164 g of CO2/km, complying with
BorgWarner's patented R2S(R) technology has received multiple awards, including a 2008 Automotive News PACE Environmental Award.
BorgWarner Turbo & Emissions Systems is a leading global producer of turbochargers, exhaust gas recirculation valves and other engine air management systems for passenger cars, light trucks and commercial vehicles. These systems are designed to improve fuel economy, reduce emissions and enhance vehicle performance.
