Oakland Military Institute College Preparatory Academy's Kathy Tran Named Most Outstanding High School Cadet in California at State of California Military Department Individual Major Awards Competition

Oakland Military Institute Also Took Top Honors in California Military Drill Championships

OAKLAND, Calif., March 19 /PRNewswire/ -- Kathy Tran of Oakland, a member of the senior class at Oakland Military Institute College Preparatory Academy, was named the most outstanding high school cadet in California at the State of California Military Department Individual Major Awards Competition at Los Alamitos, California on March 7, 2009. Tran earned the "Cadet of the Year" honor in the Individual Major Awards competition and walked away with the coveted General Joseph W. Stillwell Saber Award.

At the middle school level for the Cadet of the Year award, Oakland Military Institute (OMI) cadet May-Linh Huynh, a sixth grader, was named a silver medalist and took second place among all middle school cadets statewide.

The awards won by Tran and Huynh are the top awards given to individual cadets for excellence in knowledge and skill of the California Cadet Corps Curriculum and for their demonstrated leadership, citizenship, patriotism, basic military knowledge, academic excellence and personal wellness.

Tran also took third place in the individual drill competition for high schoolers. Cadet Barry Huang took first place, and cadet Selina Wang took first place at the middle school level. In the individual drill category with a rifle, cadet Noel Marquez De Leon, a junior at OMI took second place.

The students competed against regional military drill teams from fourteen areas of California, all of whom had advanced to the state level by winning regional championships. The California Cadet Corps includes more than 10,000 cadets with more than 100 participating schools.

OMI students also received first place in the following categories: Middle School Squad (small unit) marching competition; Middle School Platoon (large unit) marching competition; High School Squad (small unit) marching competition, and High School Squad with arms competition.

Second place winners were won in the following: Middle School Color Guard competition, High School Platoon (large unit) marching competition, and High School Exhibition (fancy drill) competition. The Middle School Exhibition (fancy drill) competition took third place.

"Their achievements reflect hard work, determination and a positive attitude, all of which are core elements that we instill in our students."
