Eighth Grade Engineering Hopefuls to Attend American Water Works Association - NJ Annual Conference

CHERRY HILL, N.J., March 27 /PRNewswire/ -- As some of the top engineers from the water utility industry gather in Atlantic City on April 1 at the 70th American Water Works Association - NJ (NJAWWA) annual conference, they will be closely observed by eight ambitious eighth grade girls who call themselves "Femgineers." The students from Heritage Middle School in Livingston, NJ will be special guests of New Jersey American Water (NYSE: AWK), the state's largest water utility.

The Femgineers earned the trip after participating in the National Engineering Week Future Cities Competition in January on the campus of Rutgers University. For the competition, the team created a model city centered on the theme "Water and the Economy." The girls creation was a town called "Environville" which detailed an elaborate water infrastructure system. For their effort, the Femgineers received the New Jersey American Water Award for Best Infrastructure Layout.

At the NJAWWA conference, the girls will be mentored by New Jersey American Water engineers who will guide them and their teacher through the exhibit hall and poster sessions, and explain the engineering accomplishments and challenges in the water industry. The Femgineers will also be honored at a luncheon with New Jersey American Water President John Bigelow. Later this spring, the students will take a tour of a New Jersey American Water treatment plant.

"New Jersey American Water is pleased to have these brilliant students from Heritage Middle School join us at the NJAWWA conference," said Bigelow. "They have great appreciation for the value of clean water and are interested in how utilities work to ensure adequate supplies for the cities of today and tomorrow. Their experience in the Future Cities event showcased a conservation ethic that treats water as the precious resource that it is."

New Jersey American Water, a wholly owned subsidiary of American Water (NYSE: AWK), is the largest investor-owned water utility in the state, providing high-quality and reliable water and/or wastewater services to approximately 2.5 million people. Founded in 1886, American Water is the largest investor-owned U.S. water and wastewater utility company. With headquarters in Voorhees, N.J., the company employs more than 7,000 dedicated professionals who provide drinking water, wastewater and other related services to approximately 15 million people in 32 states and Ontario, Canada.
