Air Products' Technology Key to Long Island's First Hydrogen Fueling Station in Town of Hempstead Green Energy Initiative

LEHIGH VALLEY, Pa., March 30 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Ground is broken, construction work on Long Island's first hydrogen fueling station has begun, and this spring Air Products' (NYSE: APD) fueling technology is scheduled to begin providing three alternative fuels to a fleet of vehicles operated by the Town of Hempstead, New York. Air Products is a member of this alternative fuel green energy initiative, along with the Town of Hempstead, the New York State Energy Research Development Authority (NYSERDA) and National Grid. Hydrogen for this fueling station, located at the town's Conservation and Waterways headquarters in Point Lookout, will be produced through an electrolysis process that generates hydrogen from water. The process does not involve any fossil fuels.

The project's goals are to demonstrate, evaluate and educate people about hydrogen's energy technology and potential. The technology includes an electrolyzer, a hydrogen storage and compression system, and multiple fueling dispensers, and is able to provide hydrogen, a hydrogen and compressed natural gas (HCNG) blend, and compressed natural gas for alternative fueled vehicles. Air Products is supplying the fueling technology and hydrogen infrastructure for the demonstration project. The electrolyzer is provided by Proton Energy Systems.
