3M Co. lays off 1,200 workers
3M Co. said Tuesday it had laid off 1,200 employees in response to the economic downturn in the United States and internationally.
The layoffs were part of a cost-saving program previously announced, the St. Paul, Minn., Business Journal reported.
Company spokeswoman Jackie Berry said most of the layoffs would take place outside the United States. Several hundred of the cuts, however, would involve Minnesotans where 3M is based.
About 300 cuts involved the company’s Industrial and Transportation Division, Berry said.
3M has 79,000 employees worldwide. The cutback involves about 1.5 percent of its workforce, the newspaper said.
