We Energies Recognized for Having One of the Nation's Best Utility Green Power Programs

Posted on: Tuesday, 14 April 2009, 11:37 CDT

MILWAUKEE, April 14 /PRNewswire/ -- The Energy for Tomorrow(R) program offered by We Energies was named one of the nation's Top 10 Utility Green Power Programs in the annual assessment prepared by the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL). Under voluntary green power programs, consumers can choose to help support additional electricity production from renewable resources such as wind, water, solar and landfill gas.

Using information provided by utilities, NREL developed Top 10 rankings of utility programs for 2008 in the following categories: total sales of renewable energy to program participants, total number of customer participants, percentage of customer participation, green-power sales as a percentage of total utility retail electricity sales, and the lowest-price premium charged for a green-power program using new, renewable resources.

We Energies ranked number eight in total sales of renewable energy to program participants for wind, landfill gas and solar usage, and number 10 in the total number of customer participants for the company's Energy for Tomorrow program.

"Being recognized by NREL as a Top 10 program is a great reflection on our customers who participate in Energy for Tomorrow. We thank them for their participation," said Pat Keily, We Energies senior project strategist - Energy Options.

The Green Power study was performed by NREL's Strategic Energy Analysis and Applications Center (SEAAC), which integrates technical and economic analyses and leads NREL's efforts in applying clean-energy technologies to both national and international markets.

"Despite the economic downturn, utility green power sales continued to expand nationally last year," said NREL senior energy analyst Lori Bird. "These utilities are national leaders."

NREL is the U.S. Department of Energy's primary national laboratory for renewable energy and energy efficiency research and development. NREL is operated for DOE by the Alliance for Sustainable Energy, LLC.
