KPMG Named a Top Green-IT Firm By Computerworld
“KPMG is honored to receive this award from Computerworld,” said
KPMG’s green IT initiatives are part of its Living Green program, which seeks to reduce the amount of waste the firm generates and natural resources it consumes. KPMG’s leading green IT practices include:
- A new state of the art technology center, which uses 14 natural gas-powered micro-turbines that provide exceptional energy efficiency, generating up to 840 kW of electricity that is enough to support up to 75 percent of the electricity needed for the facility;
- Recycling every laptop, monitor, and printer, both for reuse and disposal of toxic materials. Last year KPMG recycled 45 tons of technology equipment;
- Reducing its energy consumption through server virtualization (using one computer server to do the work of many);
- Converting to energy efficient multi-functional duplex printers, which has enabled KPMG to avoid the emission of over 1000 tons of carbon dioxide; and
- Moving to 30 percent recycled paper, which reduces greenhouse gases by 1.12 million pounds and waste water by 4.48 million gallons annually.
Computerworld selected the organizations on its list based on a set of criteria developed with the help of green-IT industry experts. The criteria identifies organizations that are working to reduce energy consumption in IT equipment and are using technology to conserve energy and lower carbon emissions. Based on weighting scheme developed, the top 12 Green-IT Users and top 12 Green-IT Vendors lists were chosen.
“Smart organizations know that there are energy and money savings beyond data center walls, and even beyond the IT department. Green-IT efforts are found up and down the supply chain, from the data center to the desktop, from the mainframe to the end user,” said
