Great Park Board Commends Senator Barbara Boxer for Her Leadership in Securing a $470,000 Federal Appropriation

Posted on: Thursday, 23 April 2009, 19:28 CDT

IRVINE, Calif., April 23 /PRNewswire/ -- Gina Semenza, Field Representative for United States Senator Barbara Boxer, received thanks from the Great Park Corporation Board of Directors today for the Senator's sponsorship of a $470,000 appropriation to restore a historic airplane hangar at the Orange County Great Park, www.ocgp.org. This marks the Park's first federal appropriation.

"We truly thank and honor Senator Boxer for her leadership," said Larry Agran, Chair, Orange County Great Park Board Corporation. "Senator Boxer's actions are of historic significance. Millions of men and women served at El Toro over its sixty year military existence. Now, those coming to the Great Park in the future will be reminded of the historic significance of the site."

The appropriation funding will be used to refurbish the 65 year-old historic aircraft Hangar 244. The restored hangar will create a link to the property's Marine aviation past and preserve a notable building for future public use.

"The Orange County Great Park is one of the most successful base closures in the country," said Gina Semenza. "Restoring the historic Hangar 244 and related buildings is a wonderful project to embrace. The Senator supports your vision to make a great park and all you are doing to preserve its historic significance."

Senator Boxer began her political career advocating base closure issues in Marin County, California. She has continued to be involved in base realignment and closures to this day.

"Senator Boxer's appropriation is like a small seed that will grow into something big," said Irvine Mayor Sukhee Kang. "We look forward to inviting her back to the Great Park to see how her support has benefited the Park and its community."
