WASHINGTON, May 5 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ — Securing America’s Future Energy (SAFE) today praised U.S. Reps. Tim Murphy (R-PA), Neil Abercrombie (D-HI), Joe Wilson (R-SC), Tim Walz (D-MN), Shelley Moore-Capito (R-WV), Jim Costa (D-CA), and Lee Terry (R-NE) for their introduction of the American Conservation and Clean Energy Independence Act on Tuesday.

“This bill represents a major step in the right direction, and much credit is due to its bipartisan sponsors,” Energy Security Leadership Council (ESLC) Co-Chairman General P.X. Kelley (Ret.), 28th Commandant of the U.S. Marine Corps, said. “As both houses of Congress consider various energy and climate measures, it is critical that we keep our eye on the ball and ensure that energy security will not get lost in the shuffle. Reducing our nation’s dangerous dependence on petroleum is a necessary step for safeguarding our economic and national security. We are pleased that this bipartisan team has committed to facing this urgent threat.”

In September, SAFE’s ESLC – a distinguished group of business executives and national security leaders led by Smith and General Kelley – released A National Strategy for Energy Security. The National Strategy offered a comprehensive plan to reduce U.S. oil dependence, primarily through electrification of the short-haul ground transportation fleet, along with crucial measures – including expanded domestic production of oil and natural gas – to keep our nation safe and secure in the interim. In April, Sens. Byron Dorgan (D-ND) and George Voinovich (R-OH) introduced the National Energy Security Act, a bill which largely mirrors the policies laid out in the National Strategy.

The legislation introduced today similarly reflects many of the aims of the National Strategy. The bill would:

  • Increase energy access through expanded domestic supply
  • Fund conservation and expanded research and development
  • Promote cleaner energy production by providing financial certainty
  • Electrify the U.S. transportation sector to diversify energy supplies

Securing America’s Future Energy (SAFE) is an action-oriented, nonpartisan organization that aims to reduce America’s dependence on oil and improve U.S. energy security to bolster national security and strengthen the economy.
