California American Water Calls for Water Awareness During National Drinking Water Week

May 3 - 9, 2009 Event Promotes Understanding of Our Water Systems and Natural Resources

PACIFIC GROVE, Calif., May 5 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- California American Water encourages residents of the Monterey Peninsula to recognize "National Drinking Water Week" May 3 - 9. The event was established more than 30 years ago by the American Water Works Association (AWWA) to raise public awareness of the fundamental need for safe and reliable drinking water supplies.

"The importance of investing in our infrastructure and protecting our water resources cannot be underestimated," said California American Water general manager Craig Anthony. "We depend on the delivery of high quality water for everything from cooking and cleaning to fire protection and disease control."

This year, the organization will highlight topics such as the environmental value of tap water over bottled water, the study of pharmaceutical contaminants in our water ways and what the organization has termed "The Dawn of the Replacement Era," referring to the more than $250 billion needed over the next 30 years to replace aging water infrastructure in the United States.

On the Monterey Peninsula, where water supplies are strictly limited, California American Water urges its customers to mark National Water Week through heightened awareness of the need for water conservation. Below are useful conservation tips from AWWA and California American Water:

Conservation Tips:

• Don't leave the sink running while you brush your teeth.
• Fully load the dishwasher and clothes washer before running them.
• Consider landscapes that use native or drought-resistant plants that do not require much water.
• Repair dripping faucets and leaky toilets. Dripping faucets can waste up to 2,000 gallons of water each year in the average home. Leaky toilets can waste as much as 200 gallons per day.
• Install water-efficient appliances in your home. Look for the EPA WaterSense labels, and check with California American Water and the Monterey Peninsula Water Management District to take advantage of available rebates. • Don't over-water your landscape, and water early in the morning or at night to avoid excess evaporation.
• When the driveway or sidewalk needs cleaning, use a broom instead of a hose. It is required under current Monterey Peninsula water restrictions and can save up to 80 gallons of water.
