M2M Communications Chooses Aeris Communications for End-to-End Demand Side Energy Management Services

Posted on: Tuesday, 5 May 2009, 13:53 CDT

SAN JOSE, Calif., May 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Aeris Communications, the leading wireless communications service provider dedicated exclusively to the Machine-to-Machine (M2M) and telematics marketplace across North America, today announced that the company's enhanced CDMA network has been chosen by M2M Communications for its wireless communications products that support remote connectivity, data acquisition and demand side energy management applications in the utility industry.

M2M Communications, a leading supplier of web-to-wireless monitoring and control solutions, has integrated their Lodestar system technology with the Aeris network. Lodestar is an innovative web-to-wireless system that provides utility customers with a customized and secure method to remotely monitor and control energy usage during times of high electricity demand. The system also allows individual farmers to remotely monitor and control their own pumps saving them time and travel to turn a pump on or off. M2M provides the Lodestar control units, a custom Web site, versatile customer notification system, and cellular and satellite airtime to support the administration of utility curtailment programs.

"The Lodestar solution has been optimized for irrigation demand side management applications, and provides real cash benefits for both the utility and the farmer," said Mark Cratsenburg, Vice President of Sales & Marketing for Aeris Communications, Inc. "We are very pleased to be working together with M2M to bring these benefits to market."

"Aeris has been a key partner of ours in bringing this solution to market," said Steve Hodges, President of M2M Communications. "Aeris has been our wireless partner for a long time, and their expertise is instrumental in helping us successfully bring new products and services to market."

By installing Lodestar with irrigation customers in Oregon, Utah, Idaho and Arkansas to reduce the demand on the electrical system, M2M Communications' utility partners have deferred the need to build new, more costly energy resources. The greatest demand for electricity occurs when farmers are pumping water to their fields and customers are using their air conditioners to cool their homes and businesses. Demand response programs give utility companies the ability to shift the demand for power during times of peak energy demand - this helps utilities monitor power usage helping to ensure consistent, reliable electricity for all customers. Overall, M2M manages 500MW of capacity for their utility customers today and the company is planning significant expansion in 2010 to meet a growing demand within the industry.

By working with providers like M2M, Aeris can enable the utility industry to face major challenges such as managing an increased energy demand with a reduced workforce in conjunction with government mandates and regulations through the implementation of smart devices that make efficient use of public carriers' cellular footprint and bandwidth.
