HPD to Provide Engineering Design for Natural Soda's Sodium Bicarbonate Production Expansion

Posted on: Thursday, 7 May 2009, 13:16 CDT

PLAINFIELD, Ill., May 7 /PRNewswire/ -- HPD, a Veolia Water Solutions & Technologies company, has been awarded the front-end engineering design phase for Natural Soda's proposed "State of the Art" expansion at its existing facility near Rifle, Colorado. The design effort from HPD will support an increase of 125,000 tons per year (tpy) in premium sodium bicarbonate.

Upon completion of the front-end engineering and costing confirmation, HPD will supply, on a design-build basis, the crystallizer plant that also includes solids separation equipment, drying, storage/offloading, and the necessary infrastructure required for operation. The system will process naturally occurring nacholite deposits that are recovered from solution mining operations as a part of Natural Soda's pure sodium bicarbonate production.

"Natural Soda is eager to finalize the design of this expansion which will extend our name plate capacity to 250,000 tons. This project significantly enhances our position as the 2nd largest producer in North America. We are confident in the ability of the U.S. economy to recover and we see the opportunity to position Natural Soda to meet the market's growth over the coming years," commented Brad Bunnett, President of Natural Soda.

HPD was selected for the engineering phase of the project because of vast experience in chemical crystallization technology and several, successful design-build projects executed worldwide.

Natural Soda produces pure natural sodium bicarbonate from its extensive nahcolite leases which cover more than 9,400 acres. Their processing facility is located about 54 miles northwest of Rifle, Colorado, in an area known as the Piceance Creek Basin. Natural Soda, with its access to this world-class natural resource, has become a major producer of sodium bicarbonate products to the food, pharmaceutical, industrial and animal feed markets.
