Safeway, union, agree to extend contract
Union workers at Safeway grocery stores voted to strike, but suspended the action while talks with management in Denver continued.
The current contract expired Saturday night, but the company
came back with an offer for the contract extension, United Food and Commercial Workers spokeswoman Laura Chapin said.
The agreement to keep working mirrors the deal struck with King Scoopers, which agreed to a contract extension last week, the Denver Post reported Monday.
“Local 7 believes it is in everyone’s best interests to keep negotiating
and fighting for a fair deal for workers,” Chapin said.
Safeway spokeswoman Kristine Staaf said,
the hope is that by giving some extra time we will be able to come to a mutually agreeable resolution.
The extended Safeway contract will expire May 30, the Post reported.
