LyondellBasell Employees Conduct Community Projects for 10th Annual Global Care Day

Volunteers in 15 countries and four continents conduct 55 service projects in plant communities around the world on May 16.

HOUSTON, May 14 /PRNewswire/ -- The global economy has posed many challenges for companies, individuals and non-profit organizations. On Saturday, May 16, dozens of organizations around the world will benefit from more than 3,100 LyondellBasell volunteers working on an estimated 55 projects in 15 countries on four continents.

Global Care Day is the company's annual worldwide day of community service that began 10-years ago as a way to reach out to local communities where LyondellBasell operates. Global Care Day challenges employees at each of its worldwide locations to simultaneously participate in community service above and beyond ongoing community involvement activities.

"During this economically-stressed environment, it's essential to take the time to do something good for others, especially to those in the communities where we have operations. LyondellBasell has not been immune to the economic downturn and is currently restructuring its operations in the United States under Chapter 11. However, that hasn't dampened the spirits of LyondellBasell volunteers there or around the world.

In Berre, France, volunteers will don scuba gear to clean litter under the sea Calanque de l'Estaque. In Jakarta, Indonesia, volunteers will plant trees downtown while LyondellBasell colleagues in Italy will be rolling up their sleeves to donate blood. Similar activities will take place in The Netherlands, Germany, Spain, Belgium and the United Kingdom, as well as in communities in South America and Asia.

In the United States, employees will reach out to communities in Ohio, Illinois, Iowa, Pennsylvania, Michigan, Louisiana and Texas. In the Houston area, where LyondellBasell has multiple facilities and a headquarters location, employees will host 9 projects through the efforts of an estimated 1,100 volunteers. Teams will work on a variety of projects from building an outdoor classroom at a local elementary school to building a pavilion shelter in a public park.

Global Care Day is a one-day community service initiative developed by LyondellBasell to encourage employees throughout the world to come together on one day each year to make a difference in their community. Each participating site selects a project that meets the following criteria: It addresses a community need. It is aligned with one of our community relations focus areas of education, environmental quality or community sustainability. The result will leave a visible improvement because of employee involvement.
