Event offers first live online appearance viewed by nearly 3,000

CALVERTON, Md., May 29 /PRNewswire/ -- Officer.com, the leading portal for law enforcement professionals, hosted thousands of viewers recently as it became the first to offer live online video streaming of the 21st annual Candlelight Vigil at the National Law Enforcement Officers' Memorial in Washington, DC. The partnership between Officer.com and the National Law Enforcement Memorial Fund serves as an important annual remembrance for family and friends to memorialize those who lost their lives while protecting their community. This year's program honored 387 officers who were killed in the line of duty. The roll call included 133 officers killed in 2008 and another 254 previously not included, some which date back to the 19th Century.

"We had nearly 3,000 view the vigil and participate in the chat," says Officer.com Editor-in-Chief Frank Borelli who is a retired police officer. "Attendees came from all over the world including Australia, Japan, Great Britain and Russia."

Kevin Morrison, communications director of the National Law Enforcement Memorial Fund, was not surprised by the international contingent, "Many British officers attend Police Week each year in Washington, DC."

Morrison credited the live video on Officer.com as a way to showcase America's commitment to law enforcement to an international audience.

"The webcast on Officer.com will remain central to our program," says Morrison. "Feedback has been extraordinarily positive. Many appreciated the opportunity to view the event live and participate through the online chat."

"Officer.com is committed to the law enforcement professionals worldwide," says Officer.com Publisher Matt Rogers. "We felt this was a way to show our support. Those who could not be here in person could still honor their fallen brothers and sisters by watching online."

Attorney General Holder delivered the keynote address at the Candlelight Vigil with an average audience of 1,500 online visitors connecting at any one time. Simultaneous Twitter and other social media programming was also part of the extended audience.

"Live video streaming is the natural progression for content online," says Omid Jahanbin, director of product design/interactive platforms for Cygnus Business Media, the company that publishes Officer.com. "As Internet bandwidth across the globe increases, emerging content technologies are part of the media mix. Video, specifically live and high-definition, is a great example of a growth area for Internet users as well as a need and expectation in the marketplace."

The National Law Enforcement Officers' Memorial on Judiciary Square in Washington contains the names of 18,661 officers who have died in the line of duty throughout U.S. history, representing all 50 states, the District of Columbia, U.S. territories, and federal law enforcement and military police agencies.
