JetBlue Airways Signs Pratt & Whitney EcoPower(R) Engine Wash

Agreement to Reduce Airline Emissions and Save Fuel

PARIS, June 15 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ – PARIS AIR SHOW JetBlue Airways has signed an agreement to begin Pratt & Whitney EcoPower engine washes on its fleet of V2500 and CF34 engines. JetBlue will initially start washes at John F. Kennedy (JFK) International Airport in New York and at Orlando International Airport (MCO) in Florida with options to expand the service to 13 additional airport locations. Pratt & Whitney is a United Technologies Corp. (NYSE: UTX) company.

“We estimate that there is a potential to save up to 1 million gallons of fuel annually and eliminate carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by 21.9 pounds for every gallon of fuel saved using Pratt & Whitney’s EcoPower engine wash service,” said Dave Ramage, JetBlue’s vice president of technical operations. “This initiative provides us with the opportunity to run a more efficient and cost effective operation while at the same time continuing our commitment to make the world a greener place.”

New York-based JetBlue Airways has created a new airline category based on value, service and style. JetBlue currently serves 55 cities with 600 daily flights with focus cities in Boston, Fort Lauderdale, Los Angeles, New York and Orlando.

Pratt & Whitney’s patented EcoPower engine wash system reduces fuel burn by as much as 1.2 percent, eliminating three pounds of carbon dioxide emissions for every pound of fuel saved, while also decreasing engine gas temperature thus increasing the amount of time an engine can stay on wing. The EcoPower system, offered through the Pratt & Whitney Global Service Partners network, uses a closed-loop system with pure, atomized water to wash aircraft engines, avoiding potential contaminant runoff. The water is collected during the wash process and treated on-site so it can be used again and again. Using only water, not chemicals means there are no detrimental chemical reactions to the engine. The system is more effective and much faster than traditional engine washing processes.
