Sign Up for ComEd’s Free Outage Alert Pilot Program

June 22, 2009

Outage information can be vital for customers with family members and pets at home

CHICAGO, June 22 /PRNewswire/ — Now that ComEd has restored power to all of the approximately 245,000 ComEd customers affected by damaging storms that struck on June 19, as we enter the summer storm season, this is a good time for customers to sign up for ComEd’s free Outage Alert program.

The pilot program lets customers know when there is an outage at their home – even when they aren’t there. When customers sign up for this pilot, they will receive a text message when there is an outage and get regular updates until power is restored.* This kind of information can be vital, particularly for customers who have family members and pets at home.

The pilot program is open now and is available to the first 10,000 customers to sign up. All customers who sign up before program capacity is reached will receive outage alerts through July 2009.

“No one wants to be without power but if it does occur, customers want to know that ComEd is taking care of it and they want to know when their power will be on again,” said Lisa Olmstead, ComEd vice president of Customer Care. “This new technology can help us provide this information.”

Results from the pilot program will help ComEd determine how to make outage information via text messaging available to its entire customer base.

To sign up for the free outage alert pilot, customers should visit www.ComEd.com and click the Outage Alerts button at the bottom right on the homepage. Customers will need to provide a first name, last name, ComEd account number, street address, mobile phone number and their mobile carrier.

And to provide customers with more information, for the first time ComEd now has an outage map on its Web site. This easy-to-use map offers color-coded, regional information about outages, including a list of towns and the number of customers in that region without power.** By enrolling as an online user, customers can also use the Web site to report power outages, manage their ComEd accounts, and view and pay their bills.

In addition to the alerts and outage map, ComEd outage-related Web pages are mobile-enabled for customers to view outage information clearly on mobile devices.

*Note: Depending on the type of outage, in some instances, ComEd may not know that an outage has occurred. Customers should always call 1-800-Edison1 to report a loss of power.

**About the outage map: The number of customers shown without power on the outage map is provided as a range, not a specific number. An outage in a particular region does not mean that there are outages in all communities listed. Please continue to call the 24-hour media hotline for more specific outage inquiries. Please see attached page for more info.
