Seaports from across the country are sending their PR professionals to Detroit for strategic communications training.

DETROIT, June 22 /PRNewswire/ -- The 2009 PR Strategic Planning Seminar is coming to Detroit for the first time to assist communicators from all industries in developing goal-oriented, objectives-driven public relations plans. The American Association of Port Authorities (AAPA) and the Detroit Chapter of the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA-Detroit) have partnered to present the Public Relations Strategic Planning Seminar & Workshop, June 23-25, at the Detroit Marriott Renaissance Center. The event is being hosted by the Detroit/Wayne County Port Authority (DWCPA).

"Public relations professionals often serve as spokespersons for their organizations. In that role, they must juggle multiple priorities in tight timelines, often without the benefit of an up-to-date strategic communications plan to guide their day-to-day activities and decision-making processes. This comprehensive public relations and marketing seminar will explore the full scope of developing a successful strategic communications plan - from conception to implementation to analysis of results," said Aaron Ellis, AAPA's communications director.

"The Detroit/Wayne County Port Authority is pleased to host the PR Strategic Planning Seminar. It is an honor for Detroit to welcome AAPA and PR professionals from seaports from across the country to the Great Lakes. The seminar will provide a unique opportunity for Detroit to showcase its riverfront to the attendees during the River Days and Freedom Fireworks Celebrations," said Cheryl Solomon, DWCPA's marketing director. Twenty four seaports are sending their PR professionals to Detroit for the strategic communications training.

About DWCPA

In 1978, the Detroit/Wayne County Port Authority (DWCPA) was created by the State of Michigan enabling legislation, The Port Authority Act. The DWCPA is a non-profit organization principally funded by the City of Detroit, Wayne County and the State of Michigan and each government body is represented on its Board of Directors. Historically, the Port Authority's activities have focused on promoting trade through the Port of Detroit. It oversees a 32-mile stretch of the Detroit River and its jurisdiction encompasses much of Michigan's eastern coastline as well as in the hinterlands. The DWCPA is constructing a new public dock and terminal located at the foot of Bates Street in downtown Detroit west of the General Motors (GM) Wintergarden. The new terminal will further establish Detroit's riverfront as a tourist destination. The Port Authority also administers the Greater Detroit Foreign Trade Zone, Inc. (GDFTZ), a separate non-profit Michigan corporation. The GDFTZ is responsible for administering duty-free locations where foreign and domestic goods may be stored, distributed or used in manufacturing. Also, the DWCPA is a partner in a public private partnership with the Ambassador Port Corporation and the Nicholson Terminal and Dock Company that transferred ownership of the existing 34.5 acre port property to the Port Authority. This partnership will allow for future integration of shipping into Southeast Michigan's multi-modal options.
