CLEVELAND, June 23 /PRNewswire/ — The National Wood Flooring Association (NWFA) awarded Universal Floors, Inc., two Floor of the Year Awards – Best Restoration – hand cut category and Best Library/Office – hand cut category in the NWFA’s 2009 Wood Floor of the Year Contest. Contributing to the win was Universal Floors’ decision to use Waterlox Coatings Corporation’s Original Sealer/Finish on the restoration project and Satin Finish in the library.

Once a private home in the trendy Adams Morgan area of Washington, D.C., the restored space project has since been turned into commercial space. All the wood was reclaimed from the Washington, D.C. area – more than 60 percent of the original floor was repaired – and was finished in January 2009. Universal Floors chose the Waterlox Original Sealer/Finish because “the owners of the property wanted the building to maintain the hand-rubbed look already seen in the space, which Waterlox products are known to achieve,” said Sprigg Lynn, principal officer for Universal Floors.

The library is a private library in Washington, D.C. and was restored using Waterlox Original Satin Finish “to keep the old-world feel the library already maintained,” Lynn said. The wood floor was the original hand-cut floor to the building and while the plan in the beginning was to discard the floor and replace it, Universal Floors managed to save the original floor to help achieve the style and feel the owners wanted.

All Waterlox Original specially processed tung oil products penetrate wood enabling the surface to resist moisture, dirt, common household acids, heat and cold. Both the Waterlox Original Sealer/Finish and Original Satin Finish can be used on interior wood surfaces including floors, doors, cabinetry, tables and various woodworking projects. For a medium sheen, the Sealer/Finish works best and for a lower gloss, the Satin Finish is recommended as the finish coats. Tung oil is a natural oil found in the nuts of the tung tree, which is indigenous to China and South America, and has been used in all Waterlox products for more than 99 years. Waterlox Original specially processed tung oil products are far more flexible, durable and sustainable than other surface finishes, such as urethanes.

“Our special formula of tung oil and resins allows Waterlox finishes to penetrate into the wood, bringing out its rich color and shine, while sealing from the inside out,” said Kellie Hawkins Schaffner, vice president of Waterlox Coatings Corporation. “Because of the natural, old-world appearance the product gives, it is the preferred finish for most flooring restoration and refinishing projects, and has been trusted for generations by wood floor specialists. It seems only natural Universal Floors would use it for these two spaces.”
