CivicUS Releases 'Greenhouse Gas Emissions Reporting: What Tool Should I Use, When and for What?'

Report Provides Guidance to State and Local Governments on Reporting Greenhouse Gas Emissions

ROCKVILLE, Md., June 23 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- CivicUS, the leading continuous advisory service firm for leadership in state and local government, has released "Greenhouse Gas Emissions Reporting: What Tool Should I Use, When and for What?" a Research Note that analyzes the tools and products available to state and local governments for tracking and reporting greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. GHG reporting is moving away from a reliance on what organizations should be emitting based on a class or given characteristics and towards standardized procedures that are primarily focused on actual emissions. Increasingly, the reporting of GHG emissions will have job security implications for leaders in all organizations, much like financial information regulated by Sarbanes-Oxley.

"Regulations that have been passed or proposed at the state and federal levels, combined with a greater public consciousness of climate change, make tracking greenhouse gas emissions an emerging priority for local government leaders," said Joseph Aamidor, Program Director at CivicUS. "While there are a number of inexpensive tools that help jurisdictions understand their greenhouse gas emissions, some companies are offering more elaborate systems that can develop auditable estimates. This Research Note helps government leaders understand the changing greenhouse gas emissions monitoring and reporting landscape."

While many jurisdictions currently are using inexpensive GHG reporting tools, CivicUS recommends that governments consider investing in more expensive systems that can generate verifiable inventories and emissions reduction plans.

CivicUS recently held briefings and teleconferences to discuss key issues facing government leaders in the environment and public safety fields. Transcripts of the teleconferences are forthcoming. At these events, CivicUS conducted a survey of government spending priorities and plans to release the results in subsequent publications. CivicUS will hold its next round of teleconferences on September 22nd and 23rd. There is no charge to participate, but attendance is limited. For information, call 301-296-4440 x1271 or email events@civicus.com.
