Posted on: Wednesday, 8 July 2009, 15:04 CDT

NEW YORK, July 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Scientific American Book Club, the leading book club dedicated to exploring the best of science and technology, kicks off a tribute to the Apollo missions and spaceflight with several exciting, new titles. Beginning in July, the Club is highlighting books about the space missions including a collection of first-hand accounts from Apollo astronauts as well as a stunning photography book with 3-D photographs of the Moon.

Offering members great selection and value, the Club will feature five new titles to commemorate the anniversary of man's first landing on the Moon. The titles are available to members of the Scientific American Book Club at the Club's website (www.sciambookclub.com) and in Club magazines.

"On July 20th, 1969, Apollo 11 opened a new chapter in manned spaceflight history," said Joseph Craig, Editor-in Chief of the Club. "At Scientific American Book Club, we are celebrating this pivotal moment in American space and science history with high quality, great-value books about the Apollo missions and other space programs."

The Apollo missions included both manned and unmanned flights flown by NASA between 1961 and 1975. VOICES FROM THE MOON by Andrew Chaikin compiles interviews conducted by Chaikin with 23 of the 24 Apollo astronauts. The book brings together the stories from these historic men into a single narrative about America's lunar journey.

Exploring the role of astronaut as photographer, APOLLO: THROUGH THE EYES OF THE ASTRONAUTS gathers together the favorite images from each of the Apollo astronauts along with their commentary. Acclaimed author and astrophysicist Stephen Hawking and his daughter Lucy Hawking contribute a foreword to this remarkable book.

Also new to Scientific America are two books focusing on planet Earth and the Moon. EARTHRISE: HOW MAN FIRST SAW EARTH by Robert Poole tells the story behind some of the first photographs taken of Earth, including Harrison Schmidt's "blue marble" photograph. These images changed our view of humanity and inspired the rise of the environmental movement. MOON 3-D by Jim Bell adds a new dimension to our fascination with this celestial body. Featuring 120 3-D and full-color photographs of the Moon's rocks, craters and landscapes, the book makes it feel like you are walking on the Moon.

For a comprehensive history of the space age, the SMITHSONIAN ATLAS OF SPACE EXPLORATION by Roger Launius covers everything from the dawn of the space age to the exploration of the outer solar system. This historical account shows the impact space exploration has had on mankind's view of himself and his universe.
