A federal medium-security prison in Atlanta is the home for disgraced and convicted Ponzi schemer Bernard Madoff.
Unclear was whether the U.S. Penitentiary-Atlanta will be Madoff's permanent home, CNNMoney.com reported. The facility has a detention center for pre-trial and holdover inmates and houses roughly 1,950 inmates.
Madoff, 71, had been incarcerated at the Metropolitan Correctional Center in New York since his guilty plea on 11 counts. Madoff was sentenced to 150 years on June 29, for bilking billions of dollars from thousands of investors. His scheduled release date is Nov. 14, 2139.
He also was ordered to forfeit his property to comply with a $170 billion legal judgment against him.
The trial judge said he would recommend Madoff serve his prison sentence in the Northeast, but federal corrections officials have the final say.
