ACCCE Statement Regarding Secretary Chu's Return from China

Posted on: Friday, 17 July 2009, 14:22 CDT

ALEXANDRIA, Va., July 17 /PRNewswire/ -- In response to Energy Secretary Chu's return visit from China to discuss global energy use, ACCCE senior vice president of communications, Joe Lucas, released the following statement:

"Secretary's Chu recent visit to China underscores the importance of international involvement in addressing climate change concerns.

"China's use of coal has exponentially increased in the last decade and by all signs, will only continue to rise. As we look towards the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen this December, we must be aware of such trends and know that they too must address ways to effectively meet their new found electricity demands.

"We are specifically pleased that Secretary Chu, Chinese Minister of Science, Wan Gang and Administrator of National Energy Administration, Zhang Guo Bao, discussed areas of mutual cooperation on demonstrating carbon capture and storage (CCS), since the International Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and other groups have noted that CCS is essential in meeting global greenhouse gas emissions reduction goals.

"Our organization looks forward to continuing to support all governments and industries working to ensure that energy remains affordable, abundant and efficient throughout the world. There has yet to be an environmental challenge our particular industry has not met through technology and we are confident that in the future we will continue this record of success."
