RIDGEFIELD, Conn., July 23 /PRNewswire/ -- Power Play Research, providing research and information in the alternative energy sectors, announced today that it has launched Power Play Global Solar Energy Index (PPGSEI). The index will be released on a monthly basis, showing monthly and year-to-date returns of companies listed and traded on major stock exchanges throughout the developed world. PPGSEI is for informational purposes only and is not a traded index on any equity market exchange.
In making the announcement, Trevor Ugolyn, President and Research Director, Power Play Research, said, "We are pleased to introduce this broad-based index, especially given the increased worldwide attention focused on alternative energy. As the solar industry continues to rapidly evolve, the PPGSEI index is a unique tool that helps to illustrate the dislocations of this emerging industry by identifying the shift in value within sub-sectors of the supply chain. We continue to witness posturing and shifting from companies within the complex supply chain that will persist for many years until the eventual maturation of this emerging industry."
Mr. Ugolyn also reported that Power Play Research expects to launch Power Play Global Wind Energy Index and Global Water Index later this year.
PPGSEI provides performance analysis of over 50 of the leading solar energy related publicly-traded companies in the developed world, calculated on an equal-weighted basis, as identified and selected by Power Play Research. Local currency exchange differences are not calculated or incorporated into the index in any manner. However, a number of foreign companies trade in the United States as an ADR.
The overall index is divided into specific sub-sector segments within the entire solar power supply chain to illustrate the relative health of each segment of the industry. These sub-sectors include: 1) Upstream Solar Energy Technology: Equipment Manufacturing and Raw Material Suppliers -- Silicon/Ingot/Wafer Suppliers; 2) Midstream Solar Energy Systems: Solar Cell Manufactures, Cell/Module Manufactures and Module Manufactures; and 3) Downstream Solar Energy: Module Manufacturers/Developer and Integrator/Developer.
Publicly-traded solar energy related companies in the developed world included in the PPGSEI saw an overall average market return decline of -0.95% in June, 2009 and increase of 7.85% Year-To-Date, 2009. For June, the Raw Material sub-sector led the solar industry with a 7.47% return. YTD, 2009, the Cell/Module Manufacturer sub-sector leads the solar industry with a 39.21% return.
