ALLRECIPES.COM Helps Cooks Put Together Fresh Picked Meals at Farmers’ Markets This Summer

SEATTLE, July 28 /PRNewswire/ — Allrecipes.com, the world’s #1 food website (comScore Media Metrix, Nielsen/NetRatings), is participating at six farmers’ markets across the country this summer to help shoppers match family-friendly meal ideas with farmers’ market purchases and offer free recipes and guidance. Results of a recent national survey* of home cooks by Allrecipes motivated the tour: Survey feedback indicates farmers’ markets are playing an increasingly important role in food shopping routines of American families–more than half of 1,400 respondents said they plan to shop more frequently at farmers’ markets this year.

Allrecipes recently participated in farmers’ markets in San Francisco (July 18, 2009) and Philadelphia (July 25, 2009), and will have a booth at the following upcoming markets:

  • Mar Vista Farmers’ Market, Los Angeles: Sunday, August 2, 2009
  • Graham Avenue Farmers’ Market, Brooklyn, NY: Saturday, August 8, 2009
  • Eastern Market, Washington, D.C.: Saturday, August 15, 2009
  • Kirkland Wednesday Market, Seattle: Wednesday, August 19, 2009

Allrecipes.com will have a booth at the Mar Vista (Los Angeles) Farmers’ Market this coming Sunday, August 2, 2009, 8:00 am – 2:00 pm, to meet local shoppers and share recipe ideas using local, seasonal produce, and hand out seed packets, tote bags and aprons. Allrecipes will also host a second tent with children’s activities and giveaways. As in several other markets, Snapple will provide free iced cold tea samples from the booth.

Allrecipes.com’s participation at the San Francisco Ferry Plaza Farmers’ Market earlier this month illustrates the popularity of farmers’ markets, as well as an increased interest among home cooks to expand their meal options and find inspiration for new dishes using fresh, seasonal foods. Almost one in five of approximately 15,000 San Francisco farmers’ market attendees visited the Allrecipes booth to pick up recipe cards and seed packets and talk with local experts about how Allrecipes.com can provide inspiration, guidance and support through its online community of everyday home cooks.

According to Allrecipes’ national survey, the overwhelming reason consumers shop at local farmers’ markets is taste: more than 86 percent of respondents claim food bought at farmers’ markets tastes better. Over 41 percent cite the environmental benefits of buying food grown closer to home as a top priority, while cost runs a close third reason consumers say they’re shopping at farmers’ markets–40 percent cite lower prices as a primary reason for making farmers’ markets part of their regular food shopping routine.
