ROCKVILLE, Md., July 29 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Tower Companies today announced that 1828 L Street, a 12-story, 313,603 square foot office building, located in the Central Business District of Washington, DC, has earned the US Environmental Protection Agency's ENERGY STAR rating. The ENERGY STAR is the mark of superior energy performance and identifies 1828 L Street as one the most efficient office buildings in the nation. According to EPA, there are only 3,069 ENERGY STAR certified buildings, 136 of which are located in Washington, DC.
To earn the ENERGY STAR rating The Tower Companies replaced the air handlers in most of the building. These new units supply fresh air more efficiently than required by code and can control the flow of the air using 25% less energy for a similar-sized office building. Additionally, the timing of the operation of the buildings boilers and chillers was improved to better meet the needs of the tenants while not using excess energy to heat and cool the building when it is not needed. Their other ENERGY STAR rated properties include, The Tower Building at 1101 Wootton Parkway in Rockville, MD and The Millennium Building at 1909 K Street, NW in Washington, DC.
Furthermore, this office building is home to USGBC LEED Silver certified offices of Delucchi+ and LEED certified offices of Council for Responsible Nutrition. Tower retrofitted, renovated and installed these energy-efficient systems to enable tenants to qualify for LEED build-outs. This was one of the reasons it earned Tower the DC Mayor's Environmental Excellence Award. Tower has 6 LEED certified properties.
The ENERGY STAR designation helps The Tower Companies save money and helps prevent the release of dangerous greenhouse gases. This building is registered for LEED EB (Existing Building) and this is one of the first steps in the process. This is also part of Tower's overall corporate greening of their entire portfolio, which includes 4.5 million square feet of office buildings, office parks, 1,400 apartments, regional malls, residential communities, lifestyle centers, and hotels within the DC area. Of this total, one million square feet are Green or sustainable projects, and another 2.5 million square feet are in the planning stages.
The Tower Companies is a member of EPA's ENERGY STAR, Climate Leaders, and Green Power Partnership programs.
