Clunkers push Ford sales increase

Ford Motor Co. said Monday it notched its first monthly sales increase in nearly two years, backed by an 18 percent rise in sales of smaller cars.
Ford's sales accelerated with promotions focused on the government's cash-for-clunkers program, which provided as much as $4,500 for buyers who traded up in terms of mileage efficiency.
Sales of small cars, including crossover vehicles, rose substantially, while sales of trucks and sports utility vehicles also shifted 18 percent -- but the shift in larger vehicles was downward, The New York Times reported Monday.
Our products, our dealers and our advance preparation enabled us to leverage the program and drive traffic and sales to another level,
said Ken Czubay, Ford's vice president for U.S. marketing, sales and service.
The Car Allowance Rebate System gave auto companies a sudden burst at the end of the month with sales soaking up the entire $1 billion budget for the program within a week. The House Friday voted to back the program with an additional $2 billion but the Senate has yet to act on the matter.
