Posted on: Tuesday, 4 August 2009, 09:38 CDT

NEW YORK, Aug. 4 /PRNewswire/ -- Turner Construction Company, the nation's leading general builder, is marking the firm's 40th anniversary of the Turner School of Construction Management (TSCM) program. The TSCM provides minority, women, disadvantaged and small-business owners with courses on topics such as green buildings, developing a business plan, financial planning, estimating, construction law, bonding and insurance. The 40th Anniversary celebration, held in conjunction with Turner's National Community Affairs Conference, will be held on August 11th and 12th in Ohio, where the TSCM originated. The conference will be held in Cincinnati where Turner is constructing the $210 million Great American Tower at Queen City Square.

The Turner School of Construction Management is a learning program that is offered through each of Turner's offices and has been held in more than 70 cities across the country. Since the program's establishment in 1969, there have been 32,000 graduates of the TSCM program. During 2008 alone, 33 programs were held, graduating more than 1,165 people. The program has helped Turner build successful long-term relationships with minority -- and women -- owned business enterprises (M/WBEs) generating more than 48,800 contracts with a value of $17.6 billion.

Turner President and CEO Peter Davoren said, "We are very proud to have this record of accomplishment and that we are able to provide so many opportunities to minority and women business contractor communities around the country."

Turner has entered into associations with graduates of the Turner School of Construction Management on major projects around the country. Some of the notable projects include the Great American Tower at Queen City Square, Cincinnati, Ohio; Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum in Cleveland, Ohio; INVESCO Field at Mile High, Denver, Colorado; Cook County Hospital, Chicago, Illinois; US Treasury Building, Washington, DC; Charles Drew Medical Center, Los Angeles, California; Miami Intermodal Center, Miami, Florida; Arrowhead Stadium, Kansas City, Missouri; and the August Wilson Center for African American Culture in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

"Turner's community affairs programs are the lifeblood of our corporate culture. We strive to promote partnerships and relationships in the communities we serve. An important role we play is to expand opportunities for students entering the building industry, for those served by the projects we build and for local minority, women and small-businesses," said Hilton O. Smith, Turner Senior Vice President, Community Affairs.

The Turner National Community Affairs Conference will bring TSCM graduates and Turner representatives from across the country together. Representatives from Turner's Ohio minority and women owned business (M/WBEs) partnership firms will discuss their experiences becoming successful contractors, including: Ozanne Construction, New Era Builders, Regency Construction Services, R Gant LLC, Megen Construction, Smoot and Jostin Concrete.

Tom Manahan, Vice President and General Manager of Turner's Ohio operations, stated "Turner is committed to supporting communities where we do business. It is rewarding to build a hospital or a school. It is even more rewarding to build these important community resources with people from the community."

By establishing joint venture partnerships and utilizing supplier and prime contractors, Turner fulfills its ongoing commitment to providing opportunities for M/WBE firms.
