The Hotel Palomar Atlanta — Designed as ‘Art in Motion’

August 10, 2009

ATLANTA, Aug. 10 /PRNewswire/ — Exemplifying the brand theme of “Art in Motion,” the Hotel Palomar Atlanta is a study in classic modern design. The interior design of Kimpton’s first Atlanta property is the work and inspiration of Atlanta based design firm, CMMI. The 304 guestroom property is a carefully blended style of complementary but unexpected materials well within the modernist aesthetic that is unique in its application and detailing.

“Our design team was immediately immersed in the interior design for the Hotel Palomar Atlanta,” said James F. Culpepper AIA, LEED AP, Senior Principal, CMMI. “Working within the brand parameters, the objective was to create a classic modern interior emphasizing energy and eye delight over reserve and stasis, while incorporating the hotel owner’s eye for collecting art,” added Culpepper.

The neutral color palette in the lobby creates a sense of arrival, while the eye is drawn to playfully evocative fabrics, textural patterns and weaves, and the striking collection of art. Public spaces cultivate the use of contemporary materials with such features as the backlit onyx ceiling in contrast with the hand-wrought bronze finish of the wall. Notable design features include the clerestory day lighting above the ballroom corridor and the strong exterior/interior link in two areas: the terrace overlooking the neoclassical Academy of Medicine building, and the exterior architectural ‘fin’, a signage feature carried into the interior as a space defining element at the entry and registration desk. The guest rooms and suites feature generous work areas and art glass panels that create a “window” between the bathroom and sleeping areas. The suites have details such as Japanese soaking tubs and modular furnishings that separate the bedroom from the sitting area with a swivel television.
