Smoothtop electric ranges recalled

The Consumer Products Safety Commission announced a voluntary recall of Frigidaire and Kenmore Elite Smoothtop electric ranges due to a fire hazard.
The heating elements on the stove can spontaneously operate without being turned on or fail to turn off after being switched off, the commission said in a statement.
About 200,000 stoves were built by Frigidaire, a division of Electrolux Home Products Inc., of Augusta, Ga., and sold nationwide at Sears and other stores between June 2001 and August 2009 for between $1,000 NS $2,500.
Frigidaire has received 126 reports of faulty stoves including reports of burns and and property damage.
The recall involves Frigidaire, Frigidaire Gallery, Frigidaire Professional and Kenmore Elite smoothtop electric ranges with rotary knobs and digital displays.
Consumers were advised to stop using the stoves immediately and contact Frigidaire or Sears to schedule a free repair.
Consumers can call 800-449-9812 for information. Consumers who purchased their stove at Sears can call 800-449-9810, the commission said.
