MADISON, Wis., Sept. 2 /PRNewswire/ -- RMT, the leader in renewable energy development, engineering, and construction, has been awarded balance-of-plant engineering and construction work for Basin Electric Power Cooperative's (Basin Electric) PrairieWinds 1 and Minot Wind 2 farms located in Ward County, North Dakota. The two projects will generate a combined nameplate capacity of 120 MW of renewable energy.
"The Whooping Crane Migration Corridor, Federal grasslands, waterfowl production areas, and cultural resources all needed to be addressed during the often challenging siting and permitting process for these wind energy projects," stated Ron Rebenitsch, Manager of Alternative Technologies for Basin Electric. "RMT helped us successfully address these issues in the design and we look forward to working with them during construction."
RMT will be providing engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) to support the installation of 77 1.5-MW GE SLE turbines at the PrairieWinds 1 site and 3 1.5-MW GE SLE turbines at the Minot Wind 2 site. The civil and electrical infrastructure includes roads, crane walks and pads, turbine foundations, and underground collector systems. RMT is also responsible for tower erection and for construction of a 6,500 SF operations and maintenance building.
"These wind energy projects not only create new clean energy resources for North Dakota, they help stimulate the local economy," explained Frank Greb, RMT General Manager and Vice President. "We are working closely with Basin Electric to maximize the use of local construction materials and to tap into the area's labor pool."
Construction commenced at the PrairieWinds 1 and Minot Wind 2 facilities in early August. With an annual average capacity of 45 to 50 MW, these projects will generate enough renewable energy to power approximately 35,000 homes and offset over 300,000 tons per year of carbon dioxide that would otherwise be emitted from a blend of the region's power supply generators.
