AT&T Has BC Eagles Fans Seeing Green

Posted on: Friday, 4 September 2009, 08:23 CDT

FRAMINGHAM, Mass., Sept. 4 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- As thousands of students gear up to show their devotion to the Eagles this season, AT&T* and Boston College today announced a new way fans can devote some attention to the environment.

Starting Saturday, September 5th, AT&T will be collecting old cell phones and chargers for recycling at the Alumni Concourse under Section S during every BC Eagles home football game this season.

"While shopping for back-to-school supplies this year you will see everything from paper supplies to dorm furniture - all made from recycled materials. More and more students are 'going green' or taking conscious steps to care for the environment and reduce their own carbon footprint," said Steve Krom, vice president and general manager of AT&T New England. "Through our BC athletics sponsorship and recycling drive we are providing students and fans with an opportunity to help make a difference."

According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, fewer than 20 percent of cell phones are recycled each year and most people do not know how or where to recycle them. Electronic waste (e-waste) is accumulating almost three times faster than ordinary household trash. Cell phones and accessories are made from valuable resources such as precious metals, copper, and plastics - all of which require energy to extract and manufacture. Recycling just a million cell phones reduces greenhouse gas emissions equal to taking 1,368 cars off the road for a year.

Can't get to a game and still want to recycle your old cell phone? AT&T continues to provide recycling drop-off spots via all 2,000-plus retail locations across the country - including its 48 AT&T-owned retail locations in Massachusetts. You can also download free prepaid shipping labels online at www.att.com/recycle.

In addition to this local recycling initiative, AT&T has also launched an integrated wireless and texting program to keep Eagles fans further connected to their favorite BC sports teams whether they're at the game or cheering from an armchair from across the globe.

Fans can now text EAGLES to 51234 to receive text alerts with game day reminders and the latest team statistics, updates and news for Eagles football, basketball, hockey and several other sports. Fans will be able to test their BC knowledge and wirelessly participate in polls, as well as vote for in-game entertainment. The alerts will also direct consumers to an Eagles-specific portal where they can find information and content from their favorite team. Message and data rates may apply. Text STOP to quit.
