DETROIT, Sept. 10 /PRNewswire/ -- The Detroit Office of Homeland Security & Emergency Management and Auctus, Inc., have partnered with Mayor Dave Bing's Office and the City of Detroit Police, Fire and Neighborhood City Halls, to develop and distribute free copies of the Detroit Med-E-Book to households throughout the city this September during the sixth annual National Preparedness Month.
The Detroit Med-E-Book is an emergency reference guide providing critical information on how to prepare, prevent, respond and recover from emergency situations, including man-made and natural disasters. In recognition of National Preparedness Month, 100,000 homes will have a free Detroit Med-E-Book delivered to their doorsteps beginning September 11th. A limited number of copies will also be available for residents to pick up at all Detroit Neighborhood City Hall locations.
Colonel Daryl Lundy, Director, City of Detroit Homeland Security & Emergency Management, says the Detroit Med-E-Book will provide households with vital first-aid response information, preparedness and recovery instructions, and important city department and public service contact information. It will empower the community to be better prepared for everyday emergency events while waiting for trained help to arrive.
"The way we respond to emergency situations at home can be the difference between life and death," Lundy said. "We believe the Med-E-Book offers good instruction to follow before, during, and after critical situations. It is a great emergency resource for all families."
"The Detroit Med-E-Book is an important resource because it allows the residents and families of Detroit to have a static, uniform planning tool that can easily be hung on the side of the refrigerator or on the inside of a cabinet or laundry room, allowing the information to be where you need it, when you need it," said Robert Stuart, managing partner of Auctus, Inc., a local Detroit business that created and will be distributing the Detroit Med-E-Book. "It offers not only first-aid response information to help people address medical situations while trained help arrives, but also powerful preparedness information that allows the citizens of Detroit to prepare, prevent and respond to natural and man-made disasters."
According to Stuart, one event in particular inspired the creation of the Detroit Med-E-Book. "Many of us remember well the Northeast Blackout of 2003," he said. "It left Metro Detroiters without access to phones, television, radios, and perhaps most importantly, without access to information about what was going on and what they needed to do. We had to put something into the homes of the community that would help when access to many types of electronic information is unavailable."
The Detroit Office of Homeland Security & Emergency Management provides leadership in coordinating the development of a sustainable and all-hazard, regional approach to large-scale emergencies or disasters. It was able to implement the Detroit Med-E-Book without a cost to the city by using grant funding that does not take away any money from education, transportation or housing.
"Working through federal grant program guidelines, the Detroit Office of Homeland Security & Emergency Management provided the citizens of Detroit with an in-home reference planning guide. Detroit now sits at the top of the list of cities that are putting emergency actions plans in place for the community," Stuart said.
Special thanks are given to the community partners St. John Health System and Health Alliance Plan (HAP) for helping to sponsor the education awareness efforts of the program.
For more information about how to obtain a free copy of the Detroit Med-E-Book, citizens are encouraged to call: 1-866-411-MYBOOK (6926) or e-mail HSEM@detroitmi.gov.
