Nation's Mayors Travel to Washington: Urge Congress to Act on Pending Energy & Climate Legislation, Support Local Climate Efforts

WASHINGTON, Sept. 14 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Conference President Seattle Mayor Greg Nickels will be leading a group of mayors representing cities across the nation, to meet with key members of the U.S. Senate in Washington and urge action on Senate Energy and Climate legislation including support for the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) program.

The EECBG, a program first conceived by the U.S. Conference of Mayors and currently housed in the U.S. Department of Energy, is available to eligible cities, counties and states providing grants for the following purposes: to curb energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions; create green jobs; promote greater energy conservation and improve energy efficiency in the transportation, building, and other energy-consuming sectors.

Below is a list of mayors expected to travel to Washington:

Mayor Brainard, Carmel, IN; Mayor Cole, Carbondale, IL; Mayor Frank Cownie, Des Moines, IA; Mayor Euille, Alexandria, VA; Mayor Finch, Bridgeport, CT; Mayor Funkhouser, Kansas City, MO; Mayor Hays, North Little Rock, AR; Mayor Kaplan, Lauderhill, FL; Mayor Kautz, Burnsville, MN (Conference Vice President); Mayor Littlefield, Chattanooga, TN; Mayor Nickels, Seattle, WA (Conference President); Mayor Ortis, Pembroke Pines, FL; Mayor Pulido, Santa Ana, CA; Mayor Shelby, Citrus Heights, CA; Mayor Stratton, Schenectady, NY; Mayor Wahler, Piscataway, NJ; and Mayor Wild, Westland, MI.

The delegation of mayors will be meeting with key Congressional leaders throughout the day.

Nearly 1000 U.S. mayors have pledged to take local action to meet the Kyoto targets. Conference President Nickels will lead a delegation of U.S. mayors to Copenhagen in December, where the successor agreement to Kyoto will be considered.
