ACCCE Statement on Arkansas Pollution Commission's Ruling to Continue Construction on Coal Plant

ALEXANDRIA, Va., Sept. 25 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The American Coalition for Clean Coal Electricity (ACCCE) today issued this statement in response to the Arkansas Pollution Control and Ecology Commission's decision to deny a Sierra Club and Audubon Society motion to halt construction at Southwestern Electric Power Company's John W. Turk Power Plant.
"We are pleased that the APC&E Commission denied the environmental groups' motion and has agreed to allow construction at the state-of-the-art Turk facility to continue. By allowing construction to continue, the Commission ensured not only job security for the hundreds of workers already employed at the site, but the creation of new, well-paying jobs for the residents of Southwestern Arkansas. A delay would likely decimate economic growth in the region and put in jeopardy the utility's ability to provide reliable, affordable power for its customers.
"The ruling also kept on track the development of the country's first ultra-supercritical power plant and the deployment of advanced clean coal technologies. The plant's design represents a path forward in reducing greenhouse gas emissions from the utility sector and will be one of the cleanest, most efficient coal plants in the country."
