Toyota recalls 3.8 million vehicles
Toyota USA said it would recall up to 3.8 million vehicles due to driver’s side floor mats that have caused unexpected acceleration and loss of control.
The recall involves the 2007-2010 Camry, 2005-2010 Avalon, 2004-2009 Prius, 2005-2010 Tacoma and 2007-2010 Tundra models, Toyota said in a statement.
Toyota said it was working with the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to find a remedy for the problem. Toyota said the current solution involved removing the floor mats on the driver’s side to prevent the mat from interfering with the gas pedal.
A stuck open accelerator pedal may result in very high vehicles speeds and make it difficult to stop the vehicle, which could cause a crash, serious injury or death, Toyota said.
The company recommended removal of floor mats, but suggested owners who choose to keep the mats in place double check that they are properly installed.
