Statement of ANGA President Rod Lowman on the Clean Energy Jobs and American Power Act

Posted on: Wednesday, 30 September 2009, 14:33 CDT

WASHINGTON, Sept. 30 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- America's Natural Gas Alliance (ANGA) President Rod Lowman issued the following statement regarding the Clean Energy Jobs and American Power Act:

"America's Natural Gas Alliance appreciates the opportunity to be included in today's event announcing the introduction of the Clean Energy Jobs and American Power Act. ANGA represents 28 of North America's leading independent natural gas exploration and production companies, speaking for over 40 percent of the total U.S. natural gas supply, producing about nine trillion cubic feet of natural gas per year.

"For months, ANGA has worked constructively with Chairmen Boxer and Kerry, and many other members of the Senate and House, to help them understand the benefits of including strong incentives to promote domestic natural gas in any climate legislation. It is a clean, abundant American resource with the power to create jobs, significantly reduce CO2 emissions, and help provide a cleaner energy future. Right here in America, we have at least a 100-year supply, and are developing even more through the use of new technologies.

"With the right policy incentives, natural gas can and should be the foundation of the solution for our energy future. Natural gas can provide dramatic decreases in greenhouse gas emissions and do so more quickly than any other currently viable options. Natural gas can also enhance our nation's energy security through increased use of natural gas vehicles.

"We particularly appreciate the willingness of Chairmen Boxer and Kerry to work with us, and thank them for including provisions in their bill that will enable us to continue to engage in the process of developing language that will effectively promote natural gas as part of the climate solution. The Clean Energy Jobs and American Power Act provides a starting point with 'natural gas placeholder' language. The placeholder establishes a new EPA program to provide financial incentives to power projects that reduce greenhouse gas emissions that are not otherwise eligible for tax credits. As the legislative process moves forward, all understand that natural gas has more to contribute to a climate bill's overall carbon-reduction potential. ANGA is highly supportive of that broader legislative objective.

"ANGA looks forward to working with Chairmen Boxer and Kerry, members of their respective committees, and all other members of the U.S. Senate over the coming weeks to ensure that any final energy and climate bill fully recognizes the environmental, economic and energy security benefits of abundant natural gas."
