Mount Airy Casino Resort to Present A Salute to America’s Veterans
PARADISE TOWNSHIP, Pa., Oct. 5 /PRNewswire/ — Mount Airy Casino Resort will roll out the red carpet — as well as a Vietnam-era helicopter and tank, jeeps and Humvees — during its Salute to America’s Veterans Nov. 6th through 8th at the resort.
A special emphasis will be placed on welcoming home Vietnam Vets to publicly honor and thank America’s 2.7 million military personnel who served during the Vietnam War.
Country singer Aaron Tippin will headline the entertainment bill with a pair of performances slated for Saturday, Nov. 7.
“I’m excited to perform for our vets, their family and friends on Veterans Day weekend at Mount Airy Casino Resort in the Poconos,” Tippin stated from his home in Nashville, Tenn. “We’re going to have a party to honor our vets in a country kind of way and let everyone know that we are humbled to be invited to Mount Airy to help celebrate this time-honored American tradition.”
In the wake of the September 11, 2001 attacks, Tippin wrote and released the patriotic anthem “Where the Star and Stripes and the Eagle Fly” which became his most successful crossover single. Music fans will be treated to this and other signature hits including: “Kiss This,” “There Ain’t Nothing Wrong With The Radio,” “He Believed,” “Working Man’s PhD” and “Drill Here, Drill Now.”
Mount Airy is providing the local VA Centers with 100 tickets to the Tippin concert to allow disabled veterans to attend for free. Two performances are slated for 6 and 9 p.m. and tickets are $35. A portion of the ticket sale proceeds will go toward Rolling Thunder charities.
The resort is also aiming to raise at least $10,000 for a variety of veteran’s charities.
“As the United States continues to engage in combat in Iraq and Afghanistan, our men and women in uniform loom ever more in the minds of everyday people on the home front,” stated George Toth, Mount Airy President and CEO.
“In addition to honoring our veterans both past and present, we want to pay special tribute to those who served in the Vietnam War and to offer them a long-deserved ‘Welcome Home.’ “
In a collaborative effort, Mount Airy is partnering with the local chapter of Rolling Thunder – a non-profit agency whose mission is to educate the public on American prisoners of war and those missing in action -in honoring America’s military veterans as well as raising funds for a variety of veteran’s charities including Toys for Tots, Operation Santa Claus, The Fisher House and Operation Touch of Home.
The Salute to Veterans Weekend will kick off Nov. 6 with a local observance of Red Shirt Friday. A national movement, Red Shirt Friday’s mission is to show support for American servicemen and women by wearing red every Friday. T-Shirts will be available for purchase at the resort with proceeds going towards veteran’s charities.
On Friday night, Professor Louie and the Crowmatix will perform “The Spirit of Woodstock” at 9 p.m. Tickets are $15 with $5 going toward Rolling Thunder charities.
Saturday and Sunday’s events will include military memorabilia displays – both inside and out – featuring a Vietnam-era helicopter and tank, Humvees and Jeeps as well as modern military equipment. An American war expo and video screenings will also be held in the Mount Airy Event Center beginning Saturday at 10 a.m. and running through Sunday at 5 p.m.
Tobyhanna Army Depot, the region’s largest employer, will provide displays depicting its worldwide mission in support of Armed Forces. More than 40 percent of the depot’s nearly 6,000 personnel are veterans.
On Saturday at 4:30 p.m., dozens of Rolling Thunder motorcycles will provide a military escort to disabled veterans who will arrive on property from regional VA Hospitals. A cannon will signal the start of the Military Honor Guard Ceremony to officially welcome veterans and to thank them for their years of service. After opening remarks from Mr. Toth and gathered military personnel, the first of two Aaron Tippin concerts will follow.
Sunday’s events will begin with a pancake breakfast from 9 a.m. to noon where proceeds will benefit veterans, followed by the military memorabilia displays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and the musical “Americana” at 2 and 4 p.m. “Americana” is a patriotic musical revue featuring 100 years of American music.
