Congressman Bart Stupak Recognized for Excellence in Conservation, Natural Resource and Economic Policy

IRON MOUNTAIN, Mich., Oct. 10 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Today, the Michigan Forest Products Council (MFPC) announced that the Honorable Bart Stupak (D-Menominee) received the Tuebor Award from the MFPC's Board of Directors.
"Actions often speak louder than words," said MFPC Chairman Craig Timm. "Over the past 18 years, Congressman Stupak has an accomplished record as a defender of forests, the environment and the natural resource based economy." The MFPC cited his efforts to:
- Promote clean energy and renewable biomass;
- Protect the Great Lakes including the enactment of the Great Lakes Compact; and
- Encourage active forest management and job creation
The annual Tuebor Award recognizes significant accomplishments in business and natural resource policy. The award focuses on leadership in support of well-managed forests that are vital to Michigan's quality of life, environment and economy. While presenting the award Mike Sussman, Verso Paper Corporation Quinnesec Mill Manager, said "Congressman Stupak's outstanding work on wise management of our federal forests is just one example of sustainable forests vision now and for future generations." "Moreover, he recognizes the tremendous job creation potential of this renewable, natural resource based economy," added Sussman.

Total economic benefits of Michigan's forest products industry in 2009 are $14 billion. The State has 19.3 million acres of forestland, including 2.5 million of federal National Forests and 312,500 private landowners. Forest Products and Agricultural is Michigan's largest job producing sector providing over one million jobs and $80 billion in annual economic activity.
