PA State Troopers, Municipal Officers Check Vehicles on Non-Interstate Roads

HARRISBURG, Pa., Oct. 13 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ – State and municipal police personnel placed 137 trucks out of service and issued 495 traffic citations during a one-day enforcement effort that focused on inspecting commercial vehicles on rural roads and non-interstate highways in Pennsylvania, State Police Commissioner Frank E. Pawlowski reported today.

The Commercial Motor Vehicle Commonwealth Rural Roads and State Highways detail, or C.R.A.S.H., was conducted Sept. 30 by state police motor carrier enforcement teams in association with specially trained municipal police officers from 11 other agencies.

Pawlowski said 1,281 commercial vehicles were inspected. In addition to placing vehicles out of service and issuing traffic citations, officers handed out 1,405 written warnings for vehicle and driver violations and placed 31 drivers out of service.

“Federal statistics show that more than 50 percent of commercial motor vehicle crashes and fatalities in Pennsylvania occur in rural areas and on non-interstate highways,” Pawlowski said. “Our goal is to make all of our roads safer.”

Cooperating with state police in the effort were police departments from Bensalem Township, Bucks County; State College Borough and Ferguson Township, Centre County; East Hempfield and Manheim townships in Lancaster County; Newberry Township, York County; Pen Argyl Borough and Palmer Township, Northampton County; Scranton, Lackawanna County; Washington Township, Franklin County; and Port Authority Police, Allegheny County.
