Innovations Increase Energy Security, Reduce Navy’s Carbon Footprint

WASHINGTON, Oct. 21 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ — The following was issued today by the Department of the Navy:

Who: The Department of the Navy will hold its annual Secretary of the Navy (SECNAV) Energy and Water Management Awards Ceremony featuring a keynote address by Robert O. Work, Undersecretary of the Navy and guest speaker. This ceremony is hosted by the Naval Facilities Engineering Command.

What: The SECNAV Awards honor men and women of the Navy and Marine Corps for exemplary achievement in energy and water efficiency, and use of renewable energy sources. These accomplishments directly contribute to increased energy security, conserving precious and vulnerable natural resources, curbing greenhouse gas emissions, and reducing America’s dependence on fossil fuels.

The Secretary of the Navy will recognize these top honorees:

  • Naval Base Kitsap, Bremerton, Wash.
  • Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay, Ga.
  • Naval Undersea Warfare Center, Division Keyport, Wash.
  • Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, San Diego, Calif.
  • Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island, S.C.
  • USS Bonhomme Richard (LHD 6)
  • USS Halsey (DDG 97)

  • 12:15 p.m. — Adjourn for Luncheon

Where: The U.S. Navy Memorial & Naval Heritage Center, 701 Pennsylvania Ave., NW, Washington, D.C., 20004.

Why: Energy dependence is a strategic vulnerability. The Department of the Navy Energy Program, founded in 1985, promotes energy and water efficiency, increased use of alternatives, and reducing energy vulnerabilities, while maintaining reliable energy services for the fleet. The program has avoided more than $3.3 billion in cumulative utility costs since 1985 (inflation adjusted). The awards are presented during Energy Awareness Month to recognize excellence in sustainable energy and water management on ships, squadrons and installations around the globe. In just one year, the efforts of the 2009 honorees saved 968 billion British thermal units of shore energy, 95,000 barrels of ship fuel, two billion gallons of water and avoided $31 million in utility costs.
