Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina and American Airlines ‘Go to the Moon at 238,000 Miles’ to Raise $238,000 to Combat Hunger

November 16, 2009

CHARLOTTE, N.C., Nov. 16 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ — More than 160,000 children and seniors are among those in the Charlotte Metro Region who are at risk of hunger, and Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina in Charlotte and American Airlines are teaming up to do something about it. Beginning today, the Food Bank and American are initiating “Flight to End Hunger,” a campaign to “go to the moon at 238,000 miles” (the distance between the earth and the moon) and raise $238,000 that will help the Food Bank provide almost 30 million pounds of food this year.

For every $1 donated to the Food Bank, approximately four meals can be provided to a person in need. All contributors to “Flight to End Hunger” will be entered to win several prizes.

“It’s great to have American Airlines in our corner in the efforts to end hunger in the Charlotte Metro Region,” said Kay Carter, Executive Director of Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina. “With 20 percent of children in the region living in poverty and our partner agencies reporting an increase of 30-40 percent in requests from families for assistance over the same period last year, the need for food continues to rise.”

“This campaign is in the spirit of Oprah Winfrey’s Pay It Forward Challenge – people reaching out to help people in need,” said Gerald McGaughey, American Airlines Director -Mid-Atlantic Region, Eastern Sales Division. “We urge everyone to get onboard with us in ‘Flight to End Hunger’ and give whatever they can to this terrific cause.”

The Charlotte Second Harvest Food Bank, part of the Feeding America Network, provides food to nearly 170,000 Charlotte Metro Region residents every year. In 2008-2009 the Food Bank has distributed more than 29 million pounds of food and other essential grocery products. In the Charlotte Metro Region nearly 14 percent of the local population live in poverty, including 120,000 children and 40,000 seniors.

While helping to alleviate this severe problem is reason enough to donate to “Flight to End Hunger,” in the spirit of “Paying It Forward,” American Airlines has partnered with Marriott International Hotels to offer the opportunity to everyone who donates to be entered to win one of the following prizes:

  • Grand Prize: A Fantastic GetAAway
