Mirant Wins International Award for Engineering Innovation
ATLANTA, Dec. 7 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ — Mirant (NYSE: MIR) won the Engineering Project of the Year at the 2009 Platts Global Energy Awards for the company’s innovative approach to improving air quality at its Potomac River Generating Station in Alexandria, Virginia.
Mirant conceived of a “virtual stack” to address limitations in the original design of the station which was constructed in the late 1940s. The station was built with unusually short stacks because it is in the flight path to Reagan National Airport. Although the plant had been operating in accordance with its environmental permits, the short stacks did not assure that permitted emissions flowed upward sufficiently.
With aesthetics and the neighboring flight path in mind, Mirant applied fresh thinking to a problem that would normally be solved by building higher stacks. The company created “virtual stacks” by rerouting airflow from five stacks into two to increase pressure, and adding powerful fans to increase the upward flow without physically raising the stacks.
The Platts Global Energy Awards recognize hallmarks of excellence within the energy industry. The Energy Engineering Project of the Year category highlights achievements in surmounting specific engineering challenges, whether in complex and difficult environments, in executing a task requiring precision, or in solving specific engineering problems in new ways.
“It is a tremendous honor to be recognized in this manner by our industry peers,” said Mirant Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Edward R. Muller. “We strive for excellence and creativity in everything we do, and we are extremely proud and gratified to have earned this award.”
