NEW CITY, N.Y., Feb. 1 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ — Scott Vanderhoef, Rockland County Executive, and The Rockland County Historical Society will host the premier of a 30 minute educational documentary, “The Tappan Zee Bridge: Transforming Rockland County,” which discusses Rockland County’s history and legacy which was greatly influenced by the building of the Tappan Zee Bridge. Tuesday, February 16, 2010 12:30 p.m. at the historic Lafayette Theatre, Suffern, NY
There will also be an introduction of the new publication, “The Tappan Zee Bridge and the Forging of the Rockland Suburb” by Roger Panetta, Ph.D. Thereafter, a brief Q&A session will be held with panelists who collaborated on the Tappan Zee Legacy Project.
These two new educational projects take a retrospective look at Rockland before and after the construction of the Tappan Zee Bridge in 1955, resulting in a life-changing impact upon both Rockland County and the Hudson Valley Region. The Tappan Zee Bridge greatly enhanced interstate transportation, increased opportunities for economic growth, and allowed Rockland residents to become a part of — and grow into– a modern day thriving suburban county. It changed the formerly rural county forever.
Rockland County first became involved in the Preserve America Program in 2007, through a designation as a “Preserve America Community.”
The book and DVD were funded through the Preserve America Grant Award from the National Park Service awarded in March of 2008. Mr. Vanderhoef’s office partnered with the Rockland County Historical Society and secured the maximum grant award of $150,000.
