LYNCHBURG, Va., Sept. 16 /PRNewswire/ — Liberty University’s Center for Academic Support and Advising Services (CASAS) is offering a workforce development course Sept. 30 for automotive and industrial mechanics and technicians who recognize the importance of environmental stewardship in the repair shop and the service field.

“In collaboration with Certified Environmental Technicians (CET), a division of Clean Planet Mfg., Inc., which is a Staunton based company, Liberty will offer a series of three, one-day certification training seminars for mechanics and technicians, shop managers, anyone who exchanges fluids in automotive, equipment, marine, or industrial-based settings. The class is also beneficial for mid and senior management level team members who are striving to improve a company’s environmental stewardship and corporate marketing and PR professionals who need to know what their companies are doing to improve their corporate environmental stewardship,” said Barbara Sherman, Director of the LU Center for Professional and Continuing Education.

According to Sherman, companies that take a pro-active stance in today’s environmentally focused society are the ones that stand the greatest chance of eliminating environmental liability from their balance sheets.

“Mechanical technicians and the companies they represent bear tremendous responsibility for the environment, mainly because of the lubricating fluids they handle daily. Whether in a controlled shop environment or in the work field, the knowledge, methods and technologies technicians employ when transferring fluids such as oil, fuel, and coolants determine whether the environment, animal and plant life, and human health are protected or at risk,” said CET owner, Judy Williams.

During the 10-hour certification class, participants will learn about used and waste fluids, hazardous materials and proper handling, EPA and OSHA requirements, human health risks associated with exposure to benzene and hydrocarbons, which are found in used oil, and how to use existing and rising technologies and methods to simultaneously conduct their daily work and protect the environment.
